What can racism be classified as in the 21st century?

Racism now in the 21st century Is “ insidious and treacherous”

I agree with the answer in the article, racism today is a whole new level crude and rough.

In what ways can racism ruin a person?

Racism can harm a person physically, psychologically, and emotionally.

Some people I know that were targeted for racism were affected by these three things.

Racism is dead; long live Racism?

By Charles Quist Adade

Paraphrastic Reading

Summary:

Racism is dead; long live Racism? By Charles Quist Adade was an interesting article to read. The article states that the term racism has many definitions and its connected too many concepts. Michael Baton and William Jules Wilson social scientists claim that racism is dead. Wilson claims that the “scientific” ideas that formed racism are gone meaning that racism is dead.

There are as many definitions, of racism as there are scholars studying the subject. According Fleras and Kunz (2003), the varied definitions of term reflect the following concepts: (1) Doctrines, (2) power, (3) structures, (4) prejudice, (5) discrimination, (6) intent, (7) biology and (8) culture. For our purpose, racism is defined as a set of ideas and ideals (ideology) that asserts or implies the superiority of one social group over another on the basis of biological or cultural characteristics, together with the institutionalized power to put these racialized beliefs into practice in way that has the intent or effect of denying or excluding minority of men and women. (Flears and Kunz, 2003)

 Paraphrase:

The term racism has many different definitions or meanings. The definitions of Racism are connected to Doctrines, power, structures, prejudice, discrimination, intent, biology and culture. According to us racism is ideas and ideals that indicate that a social group is higher or superior than another because of their cultural or biological characteristics.

Reason:

I chose this section to paraphrase because as I was reading it showed me how many concepts the term racism in related to. Racism just does not reflect upon culture or power but also doctrine meaning ones belief but also even biology and intent. After reading this I learnt that racism is not just related to culture and religion.

Race as a Modern Idea

By: Charles Quist Adade

Paraphrastic Reading

Race as a modern Idea was intriguing and kept me interested. This article takes about Race and how it was classified. Years ago Race did not exist; people did not know what it meant. Francois Bernier, a French pioneer organized race into four different categories. The Europeans, Far Easterners, Lapps and the Saharan Africans. Soon after Bernier organized the four different categories Naturalist came along and created racial groups including Caucasian, Mongolian, Ethiopian, American and the Malayan. These Naturalist thought the “ White Race” was higher than everyone else.

“Race” has not always been with us (Snowden, 1970; Johnson, 2006). “There was a time before [race] and racism. (Johnson, 2006:14) The term, according to historians, was first used in the 15th century by an English Poet to refer to a line of British Kinds. Other historians trace the beginnings of the term to about 1580, when it was introduced into the English language to denote a group of people with common descent.

Paraphrase:

Race with not always around. Years ago there was no race or racism in the world. According to an English poet the term “Race” was used sometime in the 15th century. Race was referred to “a line of British Kinds”. When other historians used the term around the 1580, it was used to symbolize people that were similar to each other.

Reason:

I chose this particular section to paraphrase because it stood out to me. I was some what shocked to read that Race did not always exist because now in this world Race means a lot and you may not get treated equally or be discriminated against because of what skin color you are.  Another part that stood out to me was around the 1580’s race what used to symbolize people that shared a common race.

Negotiation, Not Retribution

By: Charles Quist- Adade

Paraphrastic Reading

Negotiation, Not Retribution by Charles Quist – Adade was a short interesting article. This article is about not to Punish one for their mistakes but to negotiate instead of creating problems. The article states that we should take a moment to think about thousands of innocent people who have died for horrible and horrific reasons that could of possibly been stopped.

As we do so, we also we should pause for a moment and, at least, ponder over the souls of tens of thousands of innocent children, women, and peasants in the developing world. Countless numbers of them have perished and continue to die everyday not only due to the direct and indirect interventions by the US- led West , but also by the apathy, wastefulness and greed of people in the industrialized nations of the world. For example, arms manufactured in the America, Russia, Asians and Middle – Easterners, to kill and maim one another. I could site many concrete cases around the world, but for brevity, the Democratic republic of Congo alone since 1996 with the complicity of the western countries, notably the USA.

Paraphrase:

We should take some time out to think about the thousands of innocent people including little children, women and peasants who passed. So many people continue to die due to so many reasons jut not because of the “Direct and Indirect Interventions” by the US– Led West. America, Russia, Asians and the Middle Eastern countries have created weapons to kill, wound or injure each other. I could list many cases but to be brief Democratic republic of Congo since 1996.

Reason:

I chose this section to paraphrase because it stood out to me the most. Millions of innocent people have died for many unforgettable reasons, even though we might have not known them we should still take out time to think about them and even pray. Those people were innocent; it could have just been one of us in the wrong place and the wrong time.

What is socialization?

“ The process of becoming a member of society, of becoming a social being, or of learning socials rules” Page 192

I believe that socialization is key in our life. Without it we would be lost. It develops society and also it creates us.

Are humans social from birth?

Babies are not born with “ an entirely blank slate to be written on by society” ( page 195) but thought and understanding a baby be have when it is born.

I think that some social traits are present at birth while other we develop through experiences.

What is Sex?

“Either of the two main categories (male and female) into which humans are divided on the basis of their reproductive functions; sex is an ascribed status. “ ( page 344)

Due to if you are male or female your are restricted from doing certain things. And are treated unequally because of your sex.  I believe that everyone not matter what sex you are should be treated fairly.

What is Gender?

“ The sense of being male or female, typically with reference to masculine and feminine social and cultural roles rather than biological differences; gender is an achieved status.” ( page 344)

A vast part of Gender roles plays a part in society and cultural. For example in some cultures male can do mostly whatever they want but women cant due to their gender doors are barred for them.

What is biological sex?

“The outcome of the combination of two specialized reproductive cells, called gametes, is the ovum, which carries only an X- chromosome; in males it is the sperm. This can carry either an X- or a Y- chromosome. “ ( page 347)

The X and Y chromosome reminded me about psychology and studying that a male only contains Y chromosome and a female has two X chromosomes due to the fact that she is female.

Chapter 15: Gender Stratification, Inequalities and Differences,

Affective Reading

Sociology: A critical introduction

Karen L Anderson

Chapter Fifteen Gender Stratification, Inequalities and Differences in Sociology: A critical introduction caught my attention due to the interesting topics in the chapter. This chapter focuses on differences between male and female around the world and how they are treated unequally. A large part of this chapter focuses on Gender Stratification which is how men and women are treated unequal in life situations. An example of Gender Stratification is men getting paid more than women in doing basically the exact same job as them. Also men seem to get majority of the promotions in the world and women are just behind. Research evidence in this chapter shows that Women compared to men are most likely to lose their job because of their family or personal responsibilities also women around the world work more part time jobs than men as well as women tend to work in “female occupations” such as teaching, nursing, sales occupation etc. After finishing this reading I felt somewhat surprised that inequality between men and women still happens today. Reading that men get paid more than women doing the same job astonished me because they are doing the same job but getting paid differently. After reading chapter 15 I had many different thoughts. Reading about marriage , men first marriage lasted about 3-4 years more longer than women’s I would have thought that women’s marriage outlast the a typical man’s first marriage.  I believe that gender stratification and inequality between men and women is not fair and we as a world stop this injustice.
